While it’s premature to be messing around with engines on the BONNY BRIDE project, I went off on that tangent as I was able to work in the basement at odd hours. I decided that the big old Detroit 4-71 (aka “Jimmie”) that the boat arrived with should perhaps be replaced with the nice little rebuilt Ford Lehman that was paintedblue and sitting in my cellar. The advantages would be fuel economy, a quieter four-stroke engine, and a smaller package. The disadvantage would be less power. While I was still pondering these issues, I realized that the Ford is small enough to fit completely aft of the wheelhouse bulkhead with its oil pan down in the keel tunnel. This would give me a much smaller engine box.
