Off Center Harbor's Remarks

Beetle Cats are perfect boats for kids to learn in and for old-timers to relax in when their cruising days are done. A harbor tour in one of these snug little gaff riggers with you and a kid and maybe a dog is about the best sort of close-in boating.

Description from Boat's Main Listing

Beetle Cat in excellent structural condition, with bronze fastenings and a new coaming.

This from the long-time owner:

“The boat was given to me when I was six or thereabouts and was a special order with all bronze fastenings. We went down to the Concordia shop at Smith’s Neck and picked it up from Leo Telesmanick. Pretty exciting day and I don’t think I looked forward through the windshield the whole way back to the Cape. Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis was its home during my younger years. Later, I sailed it with my six-year-old daughter on Tisbury Great Pond while we were on Martha’s Vineyard during the summers.

“I passed it on to daughter LZ shortly afterwards and eventually it was moored in Polpis Harbor while we were on Nantucket—until LZ moved onto boys, clothes, and other things.

“Then I loaned it out, and a big blow took it off its Groton Long Point mooring and onto the rocks. Ed McClave replaced frames, planks and centerboard trunk. I got it back later as good as when it left. It was stored in a shed at my place for many years and then off to Maine where it’s been stored under cover ever since. It was built in 1956 and I think is around number 600, but the builder’s plate went missing when the coaming was replaced. There are no cracked frames and she’s bronze fastened. She is a lovely little thing. It comes with/on a galvanized boat trailer.”
