Description from Boat's Main Listing

SHEARWATER is a high-efficiency lightweight cabin cruiser designed by Bieker Boats in Seattle.

Concept
SHEARWATER was designed to be a simple, efficient and fun family cruising boat for Pacific Northwest waters that pays homage to the picnic day-boats of the U.S. East Coast but with a modern high-tech approach to structure and hull form. Bieker Boats felt strongly that there was a need for a less-is-more approach to a powerboat, in contrast to the ever-increasing speed, weight, complexity and horsepower commonly encountered in the market.

Keeping the maximum speed to 20 knots results in a lightweight boat easily powered by a mid-range outboard. Much less fuel needs to be carried and therefore even less weight.

The use of post-cured carbon-epoxy composites makes for a very strong and tough structure.

The cockpit is self-draining and watertight, and the transom is low for easy beach and water access. The motor is recessed into a stealthy stern cutout. The cockpit comfortably seats six, with a folding-leaf, carbon composite dining table. An LPG stove and freshwater pump are located in the helm seat boxes. Yellow cedar cockpit gratings make life in the cockpit delightful. A lightweight Jester sailing dinghy sits inverted in chocks over the outboard while underway.

Fine sections forward make this boat a joy when driving into a chop; it does not pound and doesn’t need to slow down. The high flared bow gives plenty of reserve buoyancy and a dry ride while flat shallow V-sections aft make for efficient planing. A floodable midships ballast tank adds stability and comfort if conditions warrant.

Construction
The structural philosophy for the boat puts the toughness and weight down low where it’s needed and keeps higher structure as light as possible.

The hull is wood, sheathed with fiberglass, Kevlar and epoxy. The bottom is two layers of 4mm Sapele plywood sandwiching one layer of 6mm Okoume ply. The topsides are 14mm-thick red cedar strip planking. The deck, house and internal structure is foam-cored, vacuum-bagged carbon composite. Bulkheads and internal structure are 13mm thick Divinycel core. The house top is 25mm thick Divinycel. The composite parts and hull sheathing are laminated with Gougeon Bros. Pro-Set epoxy, post-cured. Sheer stiffeners and table legs are thin-wall carbon tube. The topsides are painted with Imron and the rest of the boat is painted with Awlgrip. All painting done by Delta Yachts in Seattle.

Performance

There is a floodable ballast tank for easier docking and a more comfortable ride at anchor. The fine entry and high flared bow means no pounding and a very comfortable ride even in lumpy chop
