Off Center Harbor's Remarks

Not surprisingly, Nathanael Herreshoff had a pretty nifty little daysailer built for his own use both in Bermuda where he spent his winter vacations and, later, back home in Bristol, Rhode Island. He named this boat ALERION, and many of us think she is one of the loveliest small sailboats ever built. MISCHIEF has a fiberglass hull and, except for the lack of the distinctive molded sheerstrakes that graced the original, the Rumery yard has created a handsome rendition that has brought East Coast sailors great pleasure over many years.

The ALERION was designed by Nathanael Herreshoff in 1912 as his personal boat. That boat sits at Mystic Seaport Museum where she has enthralled generations of sailors with her sensuous curves and elegant simplicity. Wisely, Rumery’s Boat Yard decided to remain faithful to the original design when they decided to build this classic in fiberglass. MISCHIEF is hull number 4 of these lovely boats.
