Off Center Harbor's Remarks

This is a very interesting boat. She is based on L. Francis Herreshoff’s legendary Rozinante design, but modified slightly (widened 18" and rigged as a yawl with a gaff mainsail) by Nat Benjamin, one of our favorite designers. Finally, TERN was built by the Gannon and Benjamin yard on Marthas Vineyard, builders known both for their skillfulness and for a no-nonsense aesthetic. The result is a boat that is pleasing to look at, marvelous to sail, and thoroughly grounded in yachting tradition. Add to this a trailer, a reliable diesel engine, and a virtually new suit of Nat Wilson sails, and you have a package of irresistible appeal.

Description from Boat's Main Listing

Tern is a 28′ “Rozinante” style yawl. Nat Benjamin, the designer, broadened her out by 18” in the beam, creating fuller body sections thus making her both roomier where one wants it and stiffer under sail. She has a gaff mainsail with 2 sets of reef points. Mizzen is marconi and jib is roller furling. With her clean lines she does not require overpowering. First reefing is comfortably done at 15-20 knots of wind; second at 25+-. Reefing is all accomplished from the cockpit.

She has comfortable sitting headroom in the cuddy/cabin and the double vee berth is luxurious! Below the berth is the water tank and the battery. There is easy sitting access to the Shipmate stove and Origo gimballed alcohol stove. Both are to starboard. To port is the flipper pump and sink as well as the Zeus 12” chart plotter. The plotter swings and locks in place for clear cockpit visibility as well. The VHF radio is accessible from both below and the cockpit.

Her cockpit has 2 comfortable cushion covered bench seats. The cockpit sole is a non-skid epoxy covered cloth over marine plywood. There is a 3” curb for engine access ( the aft end of the main bulkhead also is removable for easy engine access). All cockpit water is directed outboard so as to keep the engine dry. All drainage goes to the bilge. There is a large guzzler pump in the cockpit and an electrical bilge pump in the lowest part of the bilge. As of the summer of 2017, Tern has had very dry bilges and the pumps are relatively inactive.

The large battery was sized to accommodate a surplus for the pump as well as for an expanded electronics system. The 4G Broadband Radar was chosen for its low electrical draw.
