Off Center Harbor's Remarks

We’ve admired POOZIE for many years, and we’re not alone. Her vertical windshield and tiny, round, trunk cabin portholes add the perfect finishing touches to an extraordinarily handsome hull. A head-turner ready to go, and with her all-paint finish, she’ll be as economical to maintain as she is to buy.

Description from Boat's Main Listing

Built in 1949 by Basil Bray, Stonington, Maine, for longtime Isle au Haut lobsterman Skeet (Forrest) MacDonald. When Skeet first got the boat, he named her after his very young daughter who he fondly called “Poozie”.

32′ with a 9′ beam. Hull is cedar on oak framing. Wood deck, treated with Hamilton’s linseed recipe.

292 cu. in. gasoline engine. Fiberglass fuel tank in stern.

The boat is in good shape. When Skeet passed away in the 1990’s, his wife Virginia sold the Poozie to Harlan Billings in Stonington (Billings Diesel & Marine), and he did a fair amount of structural work, re-fastened and re-powered the hull. After Harlan passed, the boat was sold in the early 2000’s to a gentleman on Isle au Haut who later sold her to a lobsterman on the island. I bought it from him in 2018.

I have made and installed new copper keel cooler pipes, replaced the hydraulic steering hoses, replaced the carburetor, replaced the fuel pump, and painted her in the past two years. I changed the trim color from buff to dark green, and the washboards, roof, and trunk are now a light beige. Of course the new owner could change it back to the buff if desired.

Equipment includes Garmin radar and GPS chartplotter; Sitex depth sounder; VHF radio; automatic bilge pump; high pressure washdowm pump; DHR LED spotlight; running lights and cabin lights; SS Horn; hydraulic pot hauler, davit, and block; Danforth anchor with nylon line; SS fishing rod holders.

The front windows are glass, but the side windows are Lexan which have clouded and need to be revived or replaced.

I have the original mast for a riding sail and had a sail made for it, but I never got it rigged properly and I think the mast should be replaced as it doesn’t seem as strong as it should be. The boat is a little “rolly” due to the narrow beam, and the riding sail did help with that.

I have never really run her over 1,800 rpm (about 7-8 knots) because I haven’t ever been in a hurry, and she seems to like going at that speed. Skeet easily won her class in the Stonington Boat races when he was an older man. I think he had a larger engine then, and likely put her “right in the corner.”

I don’t know of any needed repairs other than the windows and mast. Not even sure about the mast, but it seemed to have too much flex when wet.

The bilge pump comes on once in a while and pumps a little out, but I don’t know where the water comes in. The hull is pretty tight and she does not take on much water at all when I launch her.

I will give her an oil change and a new oil filter.
