Off Center Harbor's Remarks
Not many as charming as this West Coast icon—or as practical. She slides along easily at her 7-knot cruising speed and only sips from her fuel tank.
Description from Boat's Main Listing
“SCAMPER” was designed and built by Professor Charles W. Harris in 1920. Harris was a professor at the University of Washington hydraulics lab which is now part of the Civil Engineering program. He drew the plans, tank tested a model and built this gorgeous fantail launch in his backyard. Research indicates Harris used the boat until 1934, taking a trip to Princess Louisa Inlet in 1922 and a trip to Alaska in 1923. “Scamper” has seen many owners in past years and has undergone many renovations, with a major refit completed in the 1980’s. Powered by a fresh (repower completed approx 2000) Yanmar 3 cyl. diesel with 2280 hours, she sports an upgraded hydraulic steering system and new fuel tank. Her bottom was stripped and sanded to bare cedar in 2013 with new bottom paint applied after getting an inspection and some minor seam re-caulking. Her pilothouse door frames sport numerous wooden boat show plaques and awards. She’s a real head turner and she runs beautifully. “Scamper” graced the cover of Wooden Boat magazine in November/December 1991 issue. Current owner has enjoyed her since 2011 and has aspirations to cruise the South Pacific, so she’s seriously for sale.
