SOLD – 28′ 1951 Herreshoff H28 Email Listing to a Friend

The H 28 was designed by L. Francis Herreshoff. He had four characteristics in mind when designing the vessel: 1) it will need to accommodate an engine; 2) maximum room for the cost; 3) a shape that will stay tight in spite of harsh sailing conditions; 4) a draft deep enough for good windward performance but shallow enough for access to shore.

This H 28 was built in 1951. In 1993 a cold molded hull was added. The process included installing new keel bolts and the bottom two feet of the hull were rebuilt to ensure a solid hull of mahogany planking in great shape to cold mold over. All of her caulking seems were reefed out and filled with epoxy. Two diagonal layers of 6mm/1/2” mahogany marine plywood were set in West System Epoxy and then overlaid with two layers of fiberglass cloth and epoxy with six coats of waterproof primer applied. An Emron Finish was the final coat resulting in a beautiful hull. The new hull, despite the additional materials, weighs less than before the project as the original hull is not absorbing water during the swelling process.

She is powered by a 28 HP 2003 Volvo diesel with 700 hours.

Since 2013, additions and upgrades include new keel bolts, new pulpits and lifelines, new wiring, new running rigging, and new interior cushions.

Additional equipment includes 25# Bruce and 15# Herreshoff anchors, each with chain and nylon rode; two burner alcohol stove, composting toilet, depth/speed/wind instruments; compass; GPS; 25 gallon Monel fuel tank.

HOLIDAY currently lies in Jamestown, Rhode Island. She is on the market as the motivated seller has moved up to a larger sailboat.
