SOLD – 38′ 1966 Warner Cutter Email Listing to a Friend

(Was $38,000) A living piece of art with a storied provenance, PHOENIX was built in Old Saybrook along the CT River in 1966 at the peak of wooden boat craftsmanship. She was designed by Winthrop “Wink” Warner and built by Seth Persson. Initially, she was to be named Hexerie until a fire destroyed Seth’s boatyard. Townspeople backed Seth, who employed and mentored local young men, and a new boatyard was built. Phoenix was the first boat built after the fire (see Wooden Boat, Jan/Feb 2011. Number 218. p62. “Seth Perrson” by Caryn B. Davis). Early on she was a charter boat in the Caribbean and according to a brochure visited the Virgin Islands, Grenada, St. Martins, Martinique as well as the Bahamas and many others. In the 80’s she was soloed across the Atlantic to the Mediterranean twice. She’s a sturdy, Cutter rigged boat with 5/4 Honduran mahogany on steamed white oak frames 12″ oc. In the 90’s she cruised the islands of Penobscot Bay and after that, she’s been knocking around southern New England primarily Narragansett Bay and Block Island. She’s a thrill to sail and hits her stride on a broad reach. With an 8000 lb lead keel she is in the water rather than on it and gives a steady, ship­ like ride. She is also a real “eye-catcher”. She receives many compliments in every harbor she frequents.
