VIXEN was built in 1937 to a design of Knud Reimers. With an overall length of 33 feet, her needle-like hull is easily driven with only 162 square feet (15 square meters) of sail area. She’s well known in Europe and just prior to being shipped to Brooklin, Maine, sailed from Cowes, England, to Trosa, Sweden, to commemorate Uffa Fox’s famous voyage in a similar boat named VIGILAN back in 1930. VIXEN’s 2010 passage of 1000 miles was made in only 12 days, five days less than VIGILANT (which still sails in Sweden). For more on this Scandinavian Classic Yacht Trust event, click here:

So good to see her being rebuilt, so comprehensively and skillfully. Especially fond of this one … long ago she appeared in one of Uffa Fox’s books. I thought, what an exquisite wee ship she must have been; i wonder, was she ever built? When i was at Findhorn (in Norman Whyte’s shop, after he went to Brooklin), there she was advertised – not only was she built, she was in Scotland, and for sale! A hard decision, to let her go … but did not have the resources … and did not imagine she would need such a radical overhaul. Good to be reassured, at last, it was the right decision!
Knud Reimers’s designs are fascinating. The Skerry Cruisers – mainly 22 and 30 Sq Metres – and the extraordinary Tumlare (which appeared on Facebook this morning! – described as one of the most beautiful yachts of the 20th C). Such graceful, elegant yachts have not been designed since.
