Does the Mary Day call at Off Center Harbor on it’s cruises?

MARY DAY and the other schooners anchor around the corner here in Brooklin at Great Cove randomly all summer, and you can find dates/cruises on her website where the schooners sail in company and have organized rendezvous, a couple of them in Great Cove.

Remember as a kid, spending my summers on the family boat in Buck’s Harbor when the Mary Day first arrived on Penobscot Bay. What a lovely vessel. Still is today.

Before they disappear i hope you have plans to do a perspective on the Shenandoah and Captain Bob Douglas of Holmes Hole–i.e Vineyard Haven.
Don’t be put off by the Black Dog ‘trappings’. Bob has created a deep culture for the Vineyard community as well as the waterfront itself.

By the way, whatever happened to the Bill of Rights schooner out of Newport?

My wife and I spent part of our honeymoon on the Mary Day. We will always remember that trip as one of the best times of our life together. She is an amazing boat with amazing owners. Hats off and much gratitude to Captain Barry, you wonderful scoundrel!

Great video guys, just one small historical correction. My farher owned the Stephen Tabor first. He bought her from Captain Guild in 1949. I think he got the Wentworth around 1957 or 8. Keep up the good work.

Great, great video! A while back, I think last year, one of you mentioned a “yawl boat”. Noticed one hanging off the Mary Day. Would anyone please help me understand? Is it like the “push boats” the Skipjacks on the Bay have? There is some legality they are complying with/circumventing, in Oystering.
    thanks,

      Maynard Bray says:

      Hi Glenn,
Yes, a schooner’s yawl boat serves the same purpose as a Chesapeake Bay push boat in that it provides mechanical propulsion for a larger unpowered sailing craft. And when not in use, both types can be hoisted on the mother vessel’s davits. The Chesapeake/Skipjack boats are set up only to push, I believe, but yawl boats like the Mary Day’s have a towing bitt for towing the schooner (often needed to maneuver them in and out of their berths) and these little boats with big engines and propellers also serve to carry passengers between the schooner and ports or islands that are visited. We’ll be doing more on yawl boats in a future OCH video.

Maynard and fellow workers of Off Center Harbor, After losing my computer and my access to Off CENTER Harbor, I am back on board. Just Viewed the video of Mary Day. After the end I had tears in my eyes. You gentlemen have created a wonderful, fantastic medium, not only to entertain but to teach a wonderful way of life. Thank you for all you have created. You will replace TV in our house. Ron
