I’ve read my copies of Grey Seas Under and The Serpent’s Coil so many times that their spines have cracked. Those men were gods, I tell you.

GREY SEAS UNDER (aka GREEN SEAS OVER in our family) and THE SERPENT’S COIL are both great books. Another great read is Jack London’s TALES OF THE FISH PATROL which is about the San Francisco Bay and Delta. It used to be very hard to find but is now back in print and easily available.
Any of William Albert Robinson’s books, THE LAST GRAIN RACE by Eric Newby, and MOTHER SEA by Elis Karllson are books that should be on every yacht’s book shelf. Along with some of the books from LodeStar Press such as Francis Cooke on CRUISING which is a compendium that Richard Wynne edited and published. It contains a lot of good reading. Some of the James Connolly books about Gloucester fishing schooners are classics. DUFFERS OF THE DEEP by Winifred Brown; TO SEA IN CARPET SLIPPERS (about an infamous sea cook on racing boats), William Snaith’s two classics ACROSS THE WESTERN OCEAN and ON THE WIND’S WAY. There are so many classic books maybe it is time for another master list compilation!

Another excellent book by Farley Mowat is “The Grey Seas Under”, a non-fiction book about the Salvage Tug “Foundation Franklin” out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the great depression and WW2 era. A fantastic read, truth is always more interesting than fiction.
