It´s a pity that the molds and the planks are already been pre-cut in these videos. I really like to see these parts being traced, cut and fitted, because living in Brazil is very difficult (read expensive here) for me to order a kit ou get access to a CNC machine.

Having the molds precut was certainly a times saving efficiency, but cutting them yourself is by no means an impossible task. The Caledonia plans include a sheet of full size printed lines/patterns (half width with centerline and baseline) for the molds that have proven to be accurate and relatively easy to layout on sheet stock of some sort. Cutting doesn’t require a CNC machine; careful work with a circular saw and tuning up with a plane and/or belt sander will prove quite workable. Spiling the shape of the planks is one of the mystical secrets of boatbuilding…they are not included in the plans. There are various ways to do this and this step is all part of the adventure. I recommend Bob Steward’s “Boatbuilding Manual”, and Iain Oughtred’s own “Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding Manual” as good resources.

How come the end of the plank seemed to curve away at either the bow or stern (I couldn’t tell which)? I looked intentional, but it left a mildly widening gap. – pjw

Enjoyed this video very much. However, I was a little disappointing it did not involve spiling the garboard to fit the keel. I will have to do that on my Lightning build this Winter and would love to see it done first. I have a basic understanding of what it involves but always learn more from watching it actually done.
