Here is a peek at what has been an entertaining project on many levels. The boat is a lovely 15’ sailing peapod of unknown heritage, that we’ll discuss that in a bit. She came to me for some repairs, a paint job, and a rolling display cradle—because she is destined to be part of a seafood trade show display and filled with ice and seaood. Such an indignity is no big deal or great insult, as my shop’s resume includes boats that I’ve repurposed as salad bars, bar coolers, sand boxes and memorial gardens. Even better, this peapod will sail again afterwards, so a temporary gig as a fishmonger is just an interesting Spring Break for her. I was greatly relieved that the ice will be contained in a custom stainless steel tray resting on the thwarts with a drain hose snaked through the new bilge drain fitting.

The design looks like the Matinicus peapod built by The Apprenticeshop in the seventies but all of theirs were lapstrake. That boat is the subject of Chapter 11 in Gardner’s “Building Classic Small Craft, Vol. 2.” The plans and dimensions there could confirm the likeness. Perhaps your carvel model was built by The Carpenter’s Boatshop: http://www.carpentersboatshop.org/or just an individual who liked what he saw in Gardner’s books

We have recently bought another set of plans from woodenboat and are getting in stock to build a rowing model (possibly for sale). What a gorgeous peapod! Perhaps her gig as a trade show booth babe is just temporary, but I would be mortified to be serving up oysters and shrimp to groping conventioneers if I were her. I hope she escapes to the sea again soon!
