Preview: Restoring a Herreshoff Fishers Island 31, Part 5: Raised Panel Bulkheads

Wizard-Patapsco II

Last posting got WIZARD a new white oak keel; now, while she’s still upside down, we’ll get going on the raised panel bulkheads. For OCH members new to this series covering WIZARD’s restoration, this boat is being restored by Brion Rieff in Brooklin, close to where our OCH office is located.

Oh, if only I had shed, I’d be turning out several small boats a year. What a hobby, combining woodworking and producing something of beauty that floats.
    All the best.

Very interesting process. Nice to see Dave hard at work. : )

I noticed that Alex was gluing the panels into their groves. Is there a chance these panels might crack with seasonal movement or is this not a concern in a marine environment?

      Hi Larry,
There is that possibility but Brion thinks it’s a remote one, and so to I. The bulkheads, panels and all, will get a good coating of paint that will retard shrinking and swelling, and because they’re below deck, they’ll not be subjected to extreme environmental changes—like direct sunshine and soaking rain. Only time will tell, but I’m betting this will work. These raised-panel bulkheads are still genuine (not a facia over plywood), are still the original 7/8″ thickness, and by attaching them to the frames, they should help greatly in stiffening the hull.

Hi Guys , Happy Holidays, I have a Herreshoff Eagle built in 1974, it needs a drop down keel .I wonder if any one has the plans so that I can have it replaced. I also ned rub rails all around. I got some mahogany wood and tried to replace them myself. I didn’t do so well. I live near Poughkeepsie NY and was wondering if there’s a local craftsman the you could suggest.Regards, Joe White popduece@(at)aol.com or jobxny(at)yahoo.com
