i have seen small examples of fittings carved from wood – is there any additional videos/info on och or other places?
Steve Stone says:
Thanks for your question, Barry. I don’t know of any others, but it’s a good topic we’ll put on our list.

I was horrified to see you teaching new carvers to draw gouges towards their bodies without mentioning that your hands need to be firmly anchored on the benchtop to limit the travel of the gouge/veining tool etc. I can imaging someone using a less than sharp gouge on something less forgiving than soft white pine (oak/hickory/hard maple)winding up with the gouge protruding just above their belt buckle . Yikes! Maybe mention starting with pine or basswood? Having a smaller workbench that allows you to move around the work would eliminate this risk, as well as mentioning that you are using razor sharp (Swiss Made? ) gouges on soft pine and that unless they have experience with carving they should never cut towards their bodies. Just my $ .02 from frequent flyer miles at my local ER as I taught myself what NOT to do. : /

Just thought I would add a note. I’ve purchased gold leaf from Art Essentials of New York a couple of times, most recently the end of July, 2016. Their website is active and the phone number Reed provided is correct.
Don Nicholas says:
Gentlemen,
My son is in the middle of building a 37′ sailboat. I am looking for some drawings of a ships wheel, two needed one larger and one smaller. I would like to fabricate the wheels for him.
My wife of 52 years passed away earlier this year and the wheels would be as a memory of her.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much. I am a woodworker and have a very well equipped shop.
Mac McCoy says:
I am interested in how to sharpen carving tools.
Thanks,
Mac
Steve Stone says:
Hi Mac. Thanks. This one is on our list with Reed for this winter.
Rich Bell says:

……I second the motion about a sharpening video specific to carving tools. There is plenty out there about sharpening planes and chisels, but much less on curves and other complex shapes.
Great video…keep up the good work!
Richard W. Jacks says:
Again, a single video that’s worth the entire years subscription cost. Well done and thank you!
William Sorensen says:
Reed,
Exquisite! Two questions:
1. What wood are you using?
2. Source for your gold paint?
Reed Hayden says:
Hi Bill,
The wood in this video is white pine and I don’t use gold paint, I use gold leaf that I get from Art Essentials of New York.
William Sorensen says:
Reed,
FYI Art Essentials of New York’s domain expired 1/5/2015
Reed Hayden says:
Hi Bill,
As far as I know they are still in business here is their number 1-800-283-5323
William Sorensen says:
Quick question Reed,
Does your summer woodcarving course cover ‘gold’ leaf application?
Bill
Reed Hayden says:
Hi Bill,
Yes my class does cover gold leafing.
David Tew says:
There was craftsman at Hodgdon Yachts who worked full time carving shell decorations for Scheherezade, a 154′ sailing yacht they built. His work was exquisite. Is there a way to post photos here?
Steve Stone says:
Hey Dave. Send ’em to us at support(at)OffCenterHarbor.com and note which video they’re for and we’ll check them out.
Richard Schneider says:
Always a mystery how this is really done, this was the best I have seen yet. Any possibility of covering sharpening of carving tools? Certainly this is much more complicated than sharpening a simple chisel so please some help here.
Dustin Urban says:
Stay tuned, Richard, I believe we’ve got a sharpening video in the pipeline.
