When Brion did Boat Festival talks, those one liners were just about every other sentence. The mirth lasted through the whole demonstration. Watching this series, I was struck by how ‘sober’ his presentation. The line about most men not knowing 5″ up close brought back the Brion I am used to. Miss him so much. Great to just see him continuing his teaching.

When building PILAR, the rigging was Bill’s job so Brian’s book was his bible. After Bill passed, it became my job to deal with what “a (wo)man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do”, so I watched with great interest this video because we/I use a ring to haul out the jib on our bowsprit and wondered if I could achieve the same stiffness of tension with the ring…the kicker-line at the end had me wide-eyed with wonder and delight. Just as his comments on gaff-rigs eased my trials of taking care of my boat’s needs. What a joy Brian Toss was. Thank you, Brian–I hope there’s some way for you and Bill to talk shop, and Thank you Jonathan McDonald for echoing my own startled laughter!

If one doesn’t know the amount of luff curvature the sail maker built in, is there a technique that can be used to estimate it? For example, would something like this (i.e., laying the sail flat and sighting down the luff) work?

Hello,
Sorry that I haven’t replied. Didn’t even know that I could. It is possible to suspend the sail horizontally, and adjust tension on the corners to get a fair shape, but this takes the right anchor points, and some skill at judging what a fair shape is. But any good sailmaker should be able to make a generalized guess for a given size and type of sail.
