    Charles Barclay says:

I just finished a four day weekend of racing Sanderling and Sandpiper catboats in NJ with my 79 year old father, youngest sister, and 11 year old son, and coaching the best college sailors in the country in 49ers, FX Skiffs, and the Nacra 17 Catamarans at a Performance Clinic at Oakcliff Sailing Center.

The differences in shape are obvious but the skills to sail both well are the same: find and maintain balance using your weight, minimal rudder, sail trim, and anticipating the puffs. Waves will stop both in light to medium air. Getting back up to speed quickly after a tack or gybe takes skill, and of course doing it a little faster than another sailor is just plain fun.

Sailing keeps challenging us to get it right and these videos are part of how we learn,

Thanks again Eric and Maynard for another great video! Its why we love OCH so much.

So why not go for a sail on the Seaport’s BRECK MARSHALL? Or is that for next time? I remember that you covered one of Gil Smith’s cats in an earlier video. We also built a Gil Smith called ANITRA that is buried in the barn somewhere.

Thanks for the catboat video! I recently became the proud owner of a 20 ft wooden cat built mid sixties ready for restoration. This was good inspiration.

Wonderful not to leave the big dry cockpit to tend a jib. Especially if you are over 80

Great video! I did not know the catboat had so many styles / variations.
It is such a pleasure and blessing to be able to watch and hear Maynard Bray’s comments on these treasures.
