I’m relatively new to woodworking. I can’t figure out why he had to use the hand planer to “take off the corners” before running it through the planar. Does he remove less wood overall this way or will it never get square otherwise?

You need a flat surface to run through the big planer or it will just copy the out of true shape of the timber.

Thanks. Loved the router technique for the porthole and interior rim.

I really enjoyed these videos on marine woodworking skills and processes. Please do more of this because it is very helpful instruction for us amateurs. Showing how to use the various machines and power tools along with lower cost alternatives is also extremely useful. Great stuff! Makes me want to take some of his courses, unfortunately I live in Florida so that would be fairly expensive. Videos like this are really a great alternative. Keep up the good work.
