The first lighthouse on Eddystone Rocks was built in 1696-1698 and completely washed away by the Great Storm of 1703. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddystone_Lighthouse This is just one example to show how dangerous it was to be a lighthouse keeper in the 18th and 19th centuries.
