What a rare treat to experience master maritime painter Steven Dews painting The Battle of Trafalgar! He takes us along to his studio and shows us a few tricks of his trade as he works on a painting. A little behind-the-scenes note: since we usually only get to see finished paintings, our entire crew stood silent and in awe as we played the first rough edit!

I am a sailor and a painter in the twilight of my life. In the 50’s I repaired a dingy and a small sailboat. Later, I sailed competitively a moth and won quite frequently. I fell in love with wooden boats and often had to repair broken tillers.
I painted in college but never close to the level of Master Artist Dews. This is a marvelous painting and the video explaining the techniques of prospective and use of a painting maul are just plain fantastic.
Please keep up following this master.

    Wow. Awesome. Again. Thanks !

Who knew small boats took part in battle at sea? Not I.

Must be a book to be written about that, if not already.

Ship of the Line usually launched all its boats and towed them behind so as to reduce the risk of them being damaged in battle.

As a retired shipwright, who is now a full-time painter, I appreciate both the nautical and artistic elements of this video. Steve Dews is of course – the best.

I really appreciate the highly detailed insights the artist shares about his technique. (I don’t think he needs to worry about any of us copying it.)
