OYSTER – a rugged 26′ coastal cruising sailboat – caught our attention during our trip out down in the Chesapeake and we were delighted when owner Marty Loken invited us for an afternoon sail.

Super awesome boat Marty. Do you have any idea how many are still around? Are there any drawings available?

      Marty Loken says:

Wayne – The Hartge Yacht Yard in Galesville, MD might have additional drawings. The only one I’ve seen is reproduced above. Because we’re in the Northwest with what might be the only Quadrant on the West Coast, I’m not sure how many others still exist, of the 19 built, but my impression is that there might likely still be a dozen in existence. (Again, the folks at Hartge Yacht Yard might have a better answer.) – Marty Loken

This seems like a very well thought out and comfortable cruising boat. A little bit of everything wanted and needed. But why is it referred to as a pilot house? I don’t see any inside helm. Only the aft tiller.

Thanks to OCH for bring this and many other boats to us!

Jeff – The boat has in the past had inside steering via cables and what must have been a drum steering wheel, but I doubt it was built that way since the wheel would have been a real obstruction in the galley/salon berth area. While “pilothouse” might narrowly be defined as an enclosure with engine and steering controls, we see the term used a lot on motorsailers that may or may not have inside steering….so apologies if we’ve misused the term, but seems to have stuck. – Marty

Wonderful little cruiser. Thanks for the tour.
This doesn’t follow: from the description, “caught our attention during our trip out down in the Chesapeake.” Marty mentions Puget Sound and I see Washington registration numbers…

Jerry – The comment about the Chesapeake was made by either Steve Stone or Eric Blake of Off Center Harbor, but they certainly saw our Quadrant 26 pilothouse sloop while visiting the Port Townsend area…and the video footage was shot in our home waters of Mystery Bay and Kilisut Harbor, nearby. (Maybe Eric or Steve will explain…?) – Marty

Another great one. I’d like to know more about the paint too. Colors and supplier perhaps?

    • Avatar

      Marty Loken says:

Scot – The pale green-gray is a custom mix in satin enamel from a Port Townsend hardware store. The brownish-burgundy color is also a custom-mixed satin, from Marshalls Cove Marine Paints. I mostly use sating finishes from Marshalls Cove and Kirby Marine Paints–sometimes semi-gloss for hullsides. As you probably know, Marshalls Cove Marine Paints and Kirby Marine Paints have the most traditional color palettes you’ll find anywhere, and both companies are willing/able to mix custom colors for a modest additional fee. – Marty

Great boat. BTW, you have a typo in your article about this boat. Hartge Yacht Yard is in Galesville, MD not Gainesville. I keep my Sabre 30 there now.

What a dreamboat! I love the pilothouse, and the eyebrow really sets off the design. Such good stuff!!!

Great design, great video! Thanks for giving me some more “winter dreaming” material.

Keep at it- glad I renewed…

I agree with Marty. She’s definitely a keeper. Also love the color scheme. Marty seems to have a real gift in that area, from what I’ve seen of his boats. Well chosen, and well done. Thanks to all y’all at OCH.
