Preview: Restoring a Herreshoff Fishers Island 31, Part 10: Sailing

Our friend, Claas van der Linde, shot these photos from his NY-30 ALERA last summer as WIZARD sailed through the WoodenBoat anchorage with Brion Rieff at her helm. Having later sailed aboard with Brion, I can assure you that WIZARD sails as well as she looks.

Being pretty new to sailing as having only had experience with a Catalina Capri 21 sloop how does the Fisher’s Island 31 compare not counting the amenities?

Mike, This would be like comparing apples and oranges. Fishers Island 31s are heavy and 44 feet long while your boat is very much shorter (22’) and weights much, much less.

The Catalina 22 is a mass produced vessel and very common at marine rental agencies and sailing clubs. Due to their high quantity they are the ‘Honda Civic’ of sailboats as most have driven/owned one or know someone who has or does. By contrast, the Fishers Island 31 is more like the ‘Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack’. Where the Civic makes for a fun run-a-bout, the Challenger is a high performance vehicle that makes for a very comfortable road trip.

A very impressive restoration and an equally impressive documentation of same by Maynard,
including a wonderful account of the boat’s circumnavigation in the early ’60’s. It’s great to see these gems saved.

Having seen Wizard under spinnaker during the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta I can say that these photos capture her beautiful lines. Larry Stam
