Kim–this series has helped tremendously. I’m wondering if this sort of Dragonfly series or something like it (Simrad 7″) would be suitable for a 32 foot Lang cruiser (single diesel). It’s a solid offshore boat (20-30 miles) though I don’t know that I’ll go that far more than 2-3x per summer. Are these entry level small MFDs still the way to go?

Would this unit be suitable for a smallish (6m) outrigger sailing canoe geared for fishing? i.e. can it run off a small separate battery and is it waterproof?

Peter, yes, ideal for your intentions. Yes, a 12V small battery will work. It is waterproof to IPX6:
In order for a product to receive an IPX6 rating, one of the many tests that the product must endure is a minimum of three minutes of powerful jets spraying at least 100 liters of water per minute all over the outer casing of the product without the water ever penetrating.
