Watch Leo Goolden as he brings back the 47’ teak-planked TALLY HO to the glorious gaff cutter she was when launched over a hundred years ago in England. This vessel, designed by Albert Strange, lies under a shed in Sequim, WA, that Leo built next to the shop/apartment he rejuvenated—helped out occasionally by Poncho the parrot and Brian the dog.

June 2, 2018 – Episode 23: The Wreck and the Rescue
Forklifting live oak flitches into piles according to length, with each
piece “stickered” from its neighbors, begins this video. Then comes
symmetry, or lack thereof, when Leo discovers that one side of TALLY HO is
quite different from the other—her port side having been crudely repaired
after a Pacific Ocean grounding during the 1960s. So he makes provisions to
fix this by removing much of that side’s planking and will use what’s left
as ribbands for bringing that side of the hull into symmetry. In the end,
he’ll have TALLY HO’s shape pretty much like what Albert Strange originally
designed.
It’s a complicated undertaking, but Leo explains it well and with the “fast
forward” frequently engaged during playback, and with his parrot’s
assistance, it all comes together understandably.
