Preview: Small World with Pär Domeij

One of the most valuable things cruising has taught me is that the human connection makes the world small, and if you keep your ears, eyes, and heart open, this will be repeatedly and powerfully reinforced.

While my brother and I traveled up the Inside Passage for R2AK 2016 as Team Bunny Whaler (you can click here to watch a video on that adventure), we met some incredible people who were always asking how they could help. When we stopped in Klemtu, a small cannery village in Finlayson Channel, roughly halfway between Vancouver Island and SE Alaska, we spent a few hours with a Swedish filmmaker and boatbuilder named Pär Domeij. Seeing our soggy existence, Pär invited us aboard S/Y SJÖA, his home and nature-film basecamp. He welcomed us with cookies, strong Swedish coffee, and “fruit soup,” a hilariuosly-named version of cider. He even let us dry out our weeks-worn wool socks by his stove.

Those few hours were enough that we still think of Pär regularly despite being 3 years removed from our chance meeting.

Coffee, cookies, fruit soup, and dry socks.

Well, wouldn’t you know it – Pär is an Off Center Harbor member, and in addition to his longer-form nature documentaries, he has published some beautiful videos of life on S/Y SJÖA on YouTube. Behind the footage of a singlehanding a modest sailboat in big blue water lies the truth that our world gets smaller through meaningful, if chance, human connections.
