What is the type of wood they mention? Is it native to NZ?

Kauri trees or Agathis australis are found only in NZ, is a pine tree and only available from dead trees on private land. An individual kauri can live for more than two millennia, reaching 200 feet tall and more than 16 feet in diameter. There is a lucrative market for swamp pine, that is trees that are dug out of the ground, they do not rot!

What cracking work. We’re just down the coast from Fairlie. I loved seeing Impala. I’ve taken a weeks leave next June when the next Fife Regatta takes place and booked my boat into Largs Marina so’s I can bob about watching all day! Thanks again.

Curious what he meant by a ‘step scarf’ on the outer hull?

Most glued scarfs are made with matched sloping faces that run out to a feather edge (what he calls a “hairy”edge). It’s strong but looks a bit ragged on the face of the plank. So he feathers the inside end of the scarf and hides it behind a frame, then steps the other end down a little to get a clean line that looks like a butt joint, but isn’t. It’s just as strong and only about three times more work :)
