One of the rites of early Spring in the New England boating world is the Snow Row put on by the visionaries at the Hull Lifesaving Museum. The 3.5 mile open water race is open to all comers—rowers as well as boat types. Classes range from surf skis to six-oared Cornish pilot gigs, and the largest class, the “livery boats,” includes a wide gamut of dories, Whitehalls, guideboats, skiffs, wherries and the like. Sliding-seat boats, both singles and doubles, are also welcomed.
The rowers this year came from all over New England, ranging from middle and high school students, the Navy crew from Old Ironsides, rowing industry professionals, and boat nuts like us. The course is set in the southeast corner of Boston Harbor, more properly Nantasket Roads, and starts at Windmill Point Beach alongside the Museum’s boathouse, runs south about 1.5 miles, rounds Sheep Isand, then runs west about a mile to a second turn at a tripod light, then comes the home stretch of a mile back northeast to the boathouse finish.
