When contemplating the many influences in my life, it is hard to know where to start.
I could start with my father, who owned a series of old schooners in the windjammer business in Maine. In the winter, he would invent things like automatic sawing machines, toys, and navigational devices. Or he’d build peapods, which is a whole story in itself. He was also a very talented portrait scuptor, and boat designer. As a headstrong teenager, he left high school after his sophomore year, but after showing MIT some of his designs, he was accepted there to study yacht design.

I couldn’t have said it much better. My father Harold Sommer, introduced me to Bob many years ago. I worked pro hockey in Springfield Mass and when my season was over, I’d get on the ferry in Wood’s Hole and spend several days in Martha Vineyard helping prep Shenandoah for the coming season. Just the whole experience of “going back in time” will be memories never lost.
