Three old salts sit around a table talking about Northwest salmon trollers. We learned a lot about these noteworthy vessels and so will you.

I enjoyed the video immensely. But I do have a recommendation: a short introduction of the participants would have been helpful.

Many thanks for posting this insightful and informative conversation. Bill Page was particularly complimentary about Phil Barron’s boat Decision. The Barron brothers, Phil and Doug built several beautiful British Columbia boats; some they built together and some they built on their own. The Nereus, pictured several times in your video was built by Doug Barron and Al Falck. As Tad Roberts said, there are fewer and fewer boat builders on the coast with the craftsmanship and energy to build these seaworthy vessels. Sadly, Doug passed away in 2019.

Spent many years photographing Native American and First Nation art and culture along the Pacific Coast. From Neah Bay, where there is still a small fleet of working wood boats, to Haida Gwaii and Klawock Alaska. Watching these “Salts” was an absolute immersion into exactly what is needed. Thanks for this wonderful story.

Fabulous job. I got very emotional watching this video. What a great bunch of guys they are. I lived in the Pacific NW for 12 years and it will always be known to me as the “other center’ of the wooden boat building world. Interesting to me how much Mainers and NW folks have in common. A legacy built by having the trees and the sea in close proximity.

I’m drawn to the fishboats of the Pacific Northwest, amazed that objects so compellingly beautiful should be able to stand such extreme conditions of service. Thank you for giving these three gentlemen a chance to speak. I’m guessing that they’re rather like the boats. That along with their eloquence each of them can stand an 18 or 19 hours turn on deck, crack a smile for a crewmate, and not freeze up when the boat gets in trouble. It’s a gift to hear their stories.

I would like to thank OCH for sharing this video. I grew up in Southeast Alaska fishing on my dads troller. Every summer the whole family and pets jumped on my dad’s fishing boat and fished the whole summer. My dad’s first troller that I remember was a Canadian doubleender. It was tight quarters with 5 kids 3 dogs and mom and dad. I was 5 or 6 years old when I started to work when my dad put us boys cleaning the humpy’s or “pink salmon”. He told us that if we we’re going to be out on the boat we might as well learn and earn. Back than the humpy’s would pay for the fuel to fish and tought us how to live on the water. The second boat my dad owned was a 35′ Ed Munk design and the last one was a fiberglass 32′ Canadian gillnet setup for a troller. I spent my whole life on the water and for me there is nothing like being on a well built wood boat.

Best interview video I have seen on work boats and work boat men. These types of boats and the people who built them and worked them are my passion. Next time OCH boys are in New Zealand I would love to show you our wooden work boats and the stories around them.

Thanks for this. Tad isn’t a man of a lot of words but when he does talk, it’s well worth listening to whatever he has to say.

What a pleasure to be “at the table” with these legendary people. I will listen to this again. Easy to see how their passion, experience, and commitment to saving these boats will be contagious with videos like this.
    Thank you OCH.

Great watch with a Sunday morning coffee. Watching the motion of the boat in the background made it feel like you were seated at the end of the table, you’re head turning as they spoke.

There’s a lot of knowledge, history and experience sitting at that table, thank you for capturing it the way you did, it was very humbling and informative.
