Excellent videos so far. When can we expect to see a revised Part 7 that covers attaching the chine and shear planks to the Oonagh?

I’ve dry fit the bottom planks and they are 5/16″ shy on the forward transom, flush at the aft transom. There’s still 3/4″ of the planks landing on the transom edge, enough to fasten with, but this has me concerned.

I’m building from the kit, and scarfed the planks using the scarfing jig provided. The ladderback joint is tight and the molds are are correctly spaced. Any idea why this happened, and whether to proceed with what I’ve got? I can add a hardwood piece to the transom bottom to cover the exposed endgrain – but it would be good to understand what’s going on.

    Any thoughts?

Thanks Kit – I’ve been powering along after some ‘tough love’ ;-) and used some solid intuition here when no vids were available. If she floats, super, if she’s fast, all the bettah.

Sorry about the tough love Maura. Glad to hear your boat is progressing. Our goal is to outrun you and get ahead. That’s the plan, let’s see how it goes.

Quick question, Steve. I’m about to apply the dynel to the bottom of Oonagh. Doug’s specs call for 2″ fiberglass tape on the outside at the lower chine to reinforce that joint. Is the tape still needed if you do the dynel, which covers that same joint? Is that recommendation for those who are not covering the bottom with dynel or are both needed? Thanks!

    • Steve Stone

      Steve Stone says:

That video is getting released this week Lou, along with 3 more hopefully. The answer is no. If you put dynel or glass over the outside of the bottom, you don’t need the tape on the outside to reinforce as the layer of dynel or glass will do that.

Our editing crew is now working on the next four videos, and I am hopeful we’ll have all four released by the end of next week. And we expect an expedited release schedule after that.

Our apologies for the delay, and thanks everyone for your patience in the release schedule.

The truth is that we saw an opportunity to create a virtual boat show to help thousands of tradespeople and organizations in the wooden boating field who have been experiencing hardships during covid, and we put most of our tiny crew into that effort for a couple months.

We had hired an outside editor to take this project over, but that took longer than expected to get up to speed, partly due to interruptions and complications caused by covid. Hopefully we’re in a groove now and the result of that will begin to show.

Hi, just want to say thanks for the fantastic videos – they are certainly worth the wait. I am building from scratch (not the kit) and have a fair bit of woodworking experience and I still learn a ton every time a new video comes out. You guys are great!

Thanks James. Should be a big week for Oonagh video releases. Two, maybe three, videos and we’re putting the final touches on the forum for builders. Still recovering from the show, but hoping to get this nice batch of videos out over the next week or two.

The release rate on these videos is just too slow.
I wish I had known that before paying the money.
    Kitt’s great.

I know you guys are wrapped up with the WWC Boat Show, and I think you are doing a wonderful job with it, but I am caught up with Kim now, including beveling the bottom planks, and Im looking for a couple of tips on how to fasten or clamp the garboard planks to glue them on. I could just tack them on with screws and fill the holes later, but I thought maybe there was a better way? Thanks.

      Trent sellens says:

I did just what you are suggesting. I made a bunch of backer blocks 1″x2″ from 1/4″ ply scrap and wrapped them in plastic tape. Use blocks both inside and out to spreed the load a little.
You’ll still have less holes to fill than a stitch and glue hull. If your doing a clear finish on the inside just space your screws evenly and fill with “Filleting Blend” from west system for good colour match.

Thanks Trent, I’ve been forging ahead based on the Geoff Kerr video series for the Caladonia Yawl, esp. part 15 on planking. Gotta say I didn’t realize there would be so many holes made by screws, since that was one of the appealing aspects of not doing stick and glue! Good luck with your build the rest of the way and thanks for your response.

I created a blog of my build at:
      http://house-doc.net/Oonagh/
On the bottom planks, I used a drywall screw on the outside on each mold.
For the chine planks, I screwed blocks to the mold to clamp to.

I love the way she explained everything. Even as old as I am, I am learning tons just by watching how she does things. Love the rasp pocket. I have never seen anyone else that uses one. I would not have thought of so many things she talks about. GREAT JOB!!

The best takeaway was the “annoyances down the line” comment. Obviously, the young lady does not suffer from shop Tourette syndrome like some of us do.

Excellent instruction, clear and then taking the time to head off the mistakes before they happen. And she obviously knows how to keep her plane sharp as well. Thanks
