We were just trying to get the damn kids in the car for school. How were we supposed to know Jack was telling us who he was going to be in life?

A few years later, here’s Jack with his buddies at the World Rowing Championships. That’s Jack rowing “stroke” at far right in the stern:

So many things lined up for Jack to get to the Worlds, but it all started when Maynard Bray loaned Jack and his twin sister a little boat to row. You just never know where a small insignificant gesture will take a kid.
