RE: checking the lofted curve
One thing all old timers do is to get your eye down at the end of the batan and sight along it. It is amazing how a good curve will show its kinks when you do that.

I have spent the last thirty years working with CAD programs and I recognize their power and utility in all sorts of ways, but I also know their limitations when they butt up against the realities of nature. This is especially clear when they are used in lofting for wooden boats. CAD programs approach irregular curves by creating mathematical formulae in various ways to establish “splines” that fulfill certain criteria. None of these formulae mimic the way wood actually bends with great accuracy. The most notable error comes where the ends of bent wood where the arc, by necessity, approaches zero. I think it is important to point out that it is imperative to trust the batten over the CAD plot.
