I saw this video when it launched (as I had participated in several Barefoot Raids by then, and new Quill was going to be in this), and because of it, got in touch with Martin Riddle. My wife Chris and I participated in the “Tawe-Nunnugah” Raid in Tasmania in early 2023, in Tasmania. What a blast! Highly recommend! Come to BC for the Barefoot, and go to Tassie for the Tawe-Nunnugah!

There are also groups of people who get together for sailing Raids without any backup or commercial aspects. We have one based in Sydney (called RAID Sydney not surprisingly) which runs lots of weekends (and longer trips) often on the lakes North of Sydney. They set things up and document their raids via Facebook, with videos on Youtube (sailing Kate Louise). I do think about trying the one in Tassie – so my 4th boat build is a Caledonia Yawl which would probably be quite good for raiding.

Congratulations. A great presentation which should inspire all sorts of small boats sailors of all kinds to join in on these adventures.
Both the Finnish and Irish Raids got me looking for raids some years ago. Wojtec, I have the gear for Scotland in May, so maybe I will join you one year….
I have been lucky enough to do the Sail Caledonia Raid with Martin with one of my brothers before the pandemic, missed a couple, and will be returning again in my wooden Swallow Bayraider again this year with two brothers. So, three men in a boat looking forward to some great sailing, a bit of rowing, and many evenings of great company, pipes and fiddles and not small amounts of great food and whiskey surrounded by spectacular scenery.
This year I also hope to tow “Pippin” to Venice to partake in Claudio’s raid which, judging from the video I have seen, will be spectacularly different in scenery given the beauty of the architecture around the lagoon, and I am sure will be every bit as much fun with a crowd of highly sociable Italian sailors!
Quill, Barefoot is very much on my radar as soon as I am on the west Coast for a summer again!
And Martin, I have every intention of making it down to Tasmania!

I hasten to add that I used to sail in Maine when in my twenties and consider it one of the worlds great cruising grounds for boats of all sizes, so Yes, I will be up that way one summer as well, I promise!

Ye Gods …. What am I buying into! Raid, “a sudden attack on an enemy by troops, aircraft, or other armed forces in warfare’ ?

My wife and I crewed on a 26′ home built boat named “Raider” which we sailed in two raids in Finland. Raider was built for Norm Wolfe in Tallin, Estonia. We met up in Estonia then trailered Raider to Finland crossing to Helsinki on a car ferry. I am not sure but the first raid was in 2009 or 2010. We sailed along the SE coast not far from Russia. The second raid in 2012 centered on the SW coast of Finland. In both raids there were boats from Sweden, Germany, Poland, Russia and Finland. July in the Baltic Sea was wonderful. If Norm sees this piece I hope he adds more details.

The Small Reach Regatta would be considered a raid by some: multiple days of cruising protected waters, stopping at islands and beaches then returning to the ‘home harbor’, campsites, etc., each afternoon. It existed for fifteen years until the organizers decided their time to run it each year was up. Sadly, it seems no one has stepped forward to carry the torch onward: https://downeasttsca.org/SRR.html
