Preview: Tom Robinson’s Solo Row Across the Pacific – Update #8 – Greetings from Tongareva

After 160 days at sea, alone, rowing across the Pacific Ocean in the boat that he designed and built for this voyage, here’s our first message from Tom Robinson after his landing on a tiny atoll.

We’ll have more from our full conversation with Tom at a later date, including how desperate the situation really was that he land on Tongareva/Penrhyn, and how he laughed for days hen I told him that there are lots of Off Center Harbor members all over the world rooting him on (google “what does root mean in Australian slang”).

Well done Tom, enjoy the island life, you earned it, enjoying this short video, when I watched your last AIS when you turned towards the inlet I saw you did 4 knots then today you released a email which said you were towed into harbor, wow I saw those speeds and thought you were on fire for land. Regards Shayne

    Tom
You are an inspiration in fortitude, determination and guts, apart from your ability to design and build the boat (do you have any second thoughts or changes you would consider for the latter)
Oh, a razer doesn’t weigh much!!

Thank You to the folks at OCH for letting us see the travels of the young fellow who is rowing across the Pacific and all of those who are building or have built wooden boats and other types with the videos here. I have been away from boating for over 50 years and though my age and abilities are creeping ever closer to the end, I enjoy staying in touch with everyone at OCH and the World Boat Show.

Just to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Stay well, and to paraphrase an old travelers’s saying: Remember that all those who wander are not lost.

    Glad you made this landfall.
Would be interested if you are planning to do any boat maintenance ?

Anything you can do to better keep the bottom clear of marine growth ?

How are your oars holding up ?

Are you going to supply this next leg of your travels any different than before ?

    Our best to you lad.

Go for it, Tom. I discovered your voyage on Off Center Harbor just as you were being carried away from your intended landing, and I held my breath waiting to see if you could make it back onto your course. Congratulations, and I await details of how you did it. Michael
