Because I so infrequently splice, each time is like the first time and slightly confusing. I found it helpful to wrap each of the three strands with a differently colored electrical tape. Using red, white and blue made it easy to proceed sequentially without confusion about which strand was to be tucked.

I was taught to leave about 1/2 inch at end in case of slippage on first use.
