One has to admire Tom’s attitude to his situation. I imagine he has bouts of deep despair, which he keeps private. He seems to very flexible & able to change his goals realistically, as his reality becomes more dire. I applaud his strength of character & his persistence in facing his life challenges, as well as continual rowing.

Well, it’s clear that his struggle was completely self-inflicted. He misjudged a number of things, any one of which could be trip-ending. But overall he seems to be satisfied with the challenge. Good for him.

In the first covid summer of 2020, my family and I traveled from Massachusetts to an inland lake in Maine for a week of relaxing and sailing, in that order. It was wonderful. On our last day, returning home, a local Mainer with her infant in the car failed to see our left turn signal and rear ended our boat and trailer, which pushed into our car destroying the rear end. The trailer was totaled. What survived with the least damage was the wood-and-epoxy boat, built by Chuck Leinweber of Duckworks. I was able to repair the boat. And most gratefully, the other driver and her child were unharmed, as were the three of us. I did feel blessed.

From savoring a swallow of water to the split second ways life can change. So much to inspire here. Glad you’re still with us, Steve. Pulling for Tom, too.

It’s funny to hear Tom ruminate on the cost of the water he is making with his desalinator while he absolutely needs it to stay alive. The difference between the value of something and its cost is rarely so stark.
I had this driven home to me many, many years ago at the end of a backpacking trip my brother and I took in Jasper National Park in Canada. It was mostly in high country with lots of streams and snowmelt, but the last part of the trail was a relentlessly steep 5 miles down a fire access road on an absolutely hot, dry mountainside.
Part way down, we met a group starting up the trail. They did not have any water with them, figuring on being able to pick up water from streams. They were completely parched. On seeing the wineskin of water that my brother was carrying (in those benighted days that was the container of choice), one guy immediately offered to buy it for $5. His buddy interrupted and said, “Hell, give him $15, it’s worth way more than that!” Transaction complete, at $15, and us on our way, my brother was grinning. When I asked him why, he said he had only paid $2 for the wineskin just before the trip.

Yes, it was deeply concerning to read of the two car accidents. I add my gratitude for your survival, as others will undoubtedly share.

Steve, these have been the most affecting videos yet of Tom’s passage/voyage. And in combination with your (and his) car wreck the emphasis on how fragile life can be is driven home starkly. I often think how an automobile wreck would upend my life here in beautiful Maine. At this time of year we have untold numbers of out of state visitors. So many of them race along the twisty, hilly roads at high speeds as they rush to enjoy their time here. I’ve taken to double flashing my headlights regularly in hopes of getting all drivers, local and from away, to slow down, be more aware and focused. At least get off their cellphones! I’m glad you survived and hope the inconveniences of the wreck don’t last too long. Be well.
