Within an hour of sending an email to our members about it, this project raised an additional $6K and was fully funded. I noticed that most of the backers were members of OffCenterHarbor.com. We’re humbled. Thanks to those who contributed! A big part of our mission is preserving traditional maritime skills/boats/communities, and passing those along to the next generation. I can only imagine the positive outcomes we might create for traditional boats and communities, down the road after we’ve grown.

As of today, the necessary funding, and more has been raised so thanks to all of you who may have contributed. I should have mentioned that I orginally learned of this project via Tom Cunliffe’s website and his audio blog. A friend who skippers a 65′ classic schooner commented that this year they saw 10 or 12 of the remaining sloops at both Antigua and St Barth’s regatta where they were a breath of honesty and reality in amongst the mega yachts.
Long may they continue to sail — on film — as well as in “the flesh.” Ginny Jones

With five days left, over $45,000 has been raised so it is hopeful. There is now a teaser on the Vanishing Sail website of Bahamian sloops racing by Onne van der Wal (or at least in his updates by e-mail). Well worth watching just for that short piece alone. So many boats have turned to potting soil in such a short time so I’m glad that folks are documenting rapidly vanishing facets of marine history.. For those of us who have seen boats in Bequia or the Bahamas, or even in Brittany, or Galway, Ireland — under sail — films like this, and books like TRADITIONAL BOATS OF IRELAND are immensely important.
