    I hope he succeeded in passing down the knowledge. Losing the art of such an intimate knowledge of nature around you would be a tragedy.

    Fascinating subject. How many sufferers did it take to impress and improve each navigator? Early knowledge is limited knowledge and nights of cloud and rain and storms must have tested it? Lashings broke, cargo washed away in fierce waves. Perhaps even crew and passengers? Survivors remembered and passed on their memories. Like early airmen croaked out with scourched breath; “Turn off switches!” So fire wouldn’t kill those who survived a crash landing! Man is a marvel! I realize it much too late!
