I have sailed the Inside Passage from Seattle to Alaska three times in three different boats. If you want to add some great stories to your arsenal the trip is a must. I enjoyed reading this writing by Dick Wagner. The passage is certainly all about the natural world, clear black water, dark green forests and black rock, bears, marine life and birds, especially my favorite trickster the raven.

“Passage to Jeaneau” by Jonathan Raban copyright 1999, a good read for us wannabes.

Have done the part from Comox, BC to Port Neville with Dr. Bill Shuman of UW Radiology, Seattle in Chili Pepper, a 24′ Skagit Orca. Unmatched cruising grounds as described. We would have gone further N but got weathered in (with the fishing fleet) at Port Neville which was a great place to visit and one that might otherwise have gone unseen. This is small boat cruising ground best done in able boats with able skippers but stunning for the scenery, wildlife and rich in history as well. There are several great, low key cruising accounts from the 30’s that deserve reading whether or not you go. The Curve of Time is one of them.

That should have been the “Inside Passage” for Irish Rose. Getting my “Passages” mixed up these days.

For a look at the solo, non-stop around the America’s circumnavigator who did sail through the Northwest Passage, check out our Video News Release of Matt Rutherford’s triumphant return to Annapolis, MD at http://www.solotheamericas.org. We are also producing a feature length documentary about Matt and his voyage to be released in 2013.
