Preview: Two Herreshoff S-Boat Videos from Bristol Boat Company

Through video and blog, OffCenterHarbor has kept you up to date with the restoration of the S-boat Mischief by Brooklin Boat Yard. Another S-boat restoration you might find of interest is being carried out by the Bristol Boat Company, of Bristol, RI, the town where these boats were originally built. Her name is Papoose and her hull was so warped out of its original shape when she arrived that i required adjusting. Rather than resort to other sources, Halsey Herreshoff and Adam Langerman (of Herreshoff Designs) remeasured the original half model using N.G. Herreshoff’s lines-taking machine. With the offsets obtained, Dan Shea of Bristol Boat Co. could prod Papoose’s hull into its correct shape as an early step in restoring it. Here’s a clip of the process. These videos were created by Halsey Fulton.

    Charles Barclay says:

A visit to the Herreshoffracing.com website finds in the text, that the owner is graciously making the molds available built for the restorations of Squaw and Papoose to other proper restorations. Next on the schedule is the S-Boat Lulworth.

The original molds are at Cape Cod Ship Building.

Making the molds available should make the restorations of the vessels in this class more accessible promoting the class. Thanks to Maynard and Off-Center for bringing the video and to the owner of Papoose and Squaw for which this work was done for bringing two boats back to the fleet in 2012.

I love all this stuff because I build wooden boat models and it helps even in model boats,Trinket

The digital data can be stored for future construction of a new boat.

Very interesting, thanks for finding these and adding them to our OCH Web site. This technology and work will assure that restorations not only preserve a classic boat for another generation but also return them to the shape the original designer intended.
