Might help those who asked about wires, I’ve built a few of these. I do clip them with a flush cutting end nipper, but it’s never truly flush. Then I use a metal file without a handle, it usually only takes few swipes to get any proud copper flush. Then sanding finishes things up.

    Bill,
Any tips on removing the wires and staples in the fore and aft? I’ve got a flush-cutter; but I wish that your video would have included this step.
    Thanks,
    David

Did Walter ever get a response about the wire being removed or cut? That was my biggest question when I started watching this series. It seems like a pretty important part of the process. Please enlighten us!
    Thanks-

I have question about the trimming or removal of the wire ties. It looked bill fileted over the entire wire on the inside of the hull. When he turned over the hull to fiberglass it said he did a lot of sanding. The hull has the wires removed. Where they pulled I think not because of fileting over them. Did he cut them off flush with the hull. On the video it show some that look like holes and some where it appears to flush cut off wire. Videos have been great with detail but seems to be missing the trimming of the wire ties. The way he bent the wires down before fileting I would think they had to be cut flush. Appeciate your clearIng this up for me. Thanks walt

Harry Bryan is such a good, clear demonstrator and narrator of his tool-oriented videos, why not have him do a series on natural timber construction of his delightful Fiddlehead DP canoe?

Another worthy project would be having someone in the New England region, near enough to make it practical for your production people and with the talent for it demonstrated by Harry and Bill, build a plywood lapstrake canoe, say one of Iain Oughtred’s models.

Those two projects added to Bill’s Fox videos would make three variations on the double paddle canoe theme, while also providing a low stress primer in the three construction methods, doing so on hulls easily built in no more space than that afforded by an average one-car garage and with easily acquired common tools. Good all-round starter course for amateurs wanting to try building their first boat.

Hi Richard. Good ideas and feedback. We’d love to film Harry building anything, but the fiddlehead is a good one for sure. We do have a glued lapstrake plywood how-to-build on the shooting list and we’re trying to work out the details of the project as I write this. Stay tuned, I hope we can make that happen for you all. Even a glued lap is a huge project when a video series is added to the mix… we’re trying to thread the needle on it and make it happen.
