Holy cannoli, what a coincidence! We just picked up that weather forecasting book the other day while in Beaufort, NC. I’m also enjoying the visuals in Eric Sloane’s Weather Book, which does a great job with concepts, but we were looking for something with really good photographs of cloud forms and such for forecasting. Good to hear another vote for the Alan Watts book.

Richard Ellis in his book The Great Sperm Whale 2011 writes about the Cruise of the Cachalot by Frank Bullen (Bullen’s narrative, The Cruise of the “Cachalot” [1898], is replete with improbably theatrical episodes of courage-usually his own-and wildly unlikely behavior on the part of various animals, and most historians are inclined to dismiss his book as more fiction than fact.)

Thank you for suggesting books to read to help pass the winter months. I’m reading “The Cruise of he Cachalot” now and intend on reading the others as well. Might I suggest “The Long Way” by Bernard Moitessier, the account of his almost 38,000 mile nonstop voyage in 1968-1969 is both enjoyable and educational.

I went looking for The Cruise of the Cachalot and found it free on Kindle – can’t ask for much more than that! Another favourite of mine is “Two Years Before The Mast” by Richard Henry Dana – it is an excellent account of early 19th century sailing life – also free on Kindle.
