Off Center Harbor's Remarks

If you're thinking of hitting the high seas to get away from the COVID and the wildfires, a splendid voyager like this L. Francis Herreshoff-designed Diddikai ketch might be just the boat to do it in. And all the more so because you can pick her up for under 20k.

Description from Boat's Main Listing

(Was $19,950) ROMANY RYE is a Herreshoff Diddikai 36 designed by L. Francis Herreshoff and built by Huber Wethy, Long Island, New York, in 1964. She is carvel planked with mahogany; her stem and stern are white oak; her frames are stem-bent white oak, and her deck is 3/4″ plywood covered in Dynel cloth and epoxy—and painted. She’s fastened with silicon bronze screws.

ROMANY RYE was sailed on the East Coast by the current owners who brought her to WA in 2017. She had her fuel polished in June (2018), new bottom paint (2018), fresh SeaGold varnish on masts and bulwarks (2018); masts were pulled and serviced with new VHF cable and antennae (2018); she was fitted with a new house battery (2018). The boat was re-wired in 2005.

ROMANY RYE is powered by 3-cylinder Yanmar 3HMF 27HP diesel. She has a Strong Seal Dripless Shaft Gland, two Group 27 batteries that are charged by the alternator and the Guest ChargePro 15-amp battery charger. She has 3 bilge pumps and a high water alarm: one 1100GPH Rule, one 2000GPH Rule, and a fixed diaphragm manual pump. For navigation, she has a Furuno GPS Navigator, Standard Horizon Eclipse VHF, Furuno LCD-LS 6000 depthsounder as well as a Danforth compass, and Weems & Plath barometer and ship’s clock. Also included is a B&G Vulcan 7 Chartplotter and the B&G V50 VHF and AIG—both new and still in the box.

Her main and mizzen masts are boxed spruce construction. For sails she has a battened mainsail, battened mizzen and working jib. She has two Lewmar 40 self-tailing primary winches in the cockpit. On the bow she has a Lofrans Royal manual windlass, a 15-kg Bruce and a 22-lb Danforth anchor as well as 5/16″ chain with 100′ of 5/8″ rode and 25′ of 1/4″ chain with a 200′ rope rode. Also included are four Sospenders inflatable PFD’s with harnesses and jack lines.

ROMANY RYE is beautiful on deck and down below and has been well cared for by her current owners. She is ready for her next voyagers!
