Email this Video to a FriendIt’s pretty magical to be able to land on islands along the coast of Maine and camp overnight. There’s a reason we can do this and take you along — it’s called the Maine Island Trail. We wanted to show you just what it takes to make wild islands accessible to us all…

Fantastic initiative. Hope folks around the world see this and adopt like programs. WE need this right here on the Gold Coast and Broadwater. There’s just too much junk and rubbish.
Congrats and fair winds.
Winston Shaw says:
Great to see folks cleaning up the islands! I used to participate in the Coastal Cleanup back in early 2000 and it was a very empowering activity. I used to donate the use of my tour boat for a day and pick up as many as 8-10 volunteers at the Bar Harbor Town pier for clean up efforts on the islands of Frenchman Bay. One year I borrowed a 40′ lobster boat and with 6 volunteers aboard we filled the boat to brimming as well as a 14′ skiff towed behind in about 2-3 hours. it took 2 town dump trucks to cart the stuff to the transfer station! Among other things that day we collected a full sized LP Gas cylinder, a full divers wet suit, about 200 bleach bottles, 2 truck tires, an abandoned fish net, rubber boots, fisherman’s gloves, 30 or 40 trap buoys, and assorted other stuff! Hate to point fingers but an awful lot of this trash was related to lobster fishing.

Was that some sort of odd growth on the tree at 7:00 min?
Heidi Perkins says:
If you are talking about the round bulb I believe it is called a burl. A burl results from a tree undergoing some form of stress. It may be caused by an injury, virus or fungus.
Jesse Terry says:
I joined this summer and did some of the trail via an alden ketch, Abigail. It was an incredible experience.

John Wujack says:
From my side of the country, the Pacific Northwest, the MITA is a bucket list item for me. Until then and for all time, my thanks to the volunteers.
Tom Gilmore says:
Great video and I love the Maine Island Trail idea. I have a question though. I have trailered my boat up to Maine from New Jersey on three different vacation trips, at the time I didn’t know about the MITA next time I will become a member before I go. The biggest difficulty I had in trailering to Maine for 7 to 10 day journeys was finding places where I could launch my boat and then store my pickup truck and trailer while I was out boating. All public ramps do not allow overnight parking and marinas are, hit or miss, on wether they 1) have a launching ramp and or 2) if they have space for you to store your rig while you are gone. Does anyone know where there is a list of launching places that allow for short term (1 to 2 week) storage? Thanks Tom Gilmore
Henri Gignoux says:
Tom,
When you join MITA you will receive the annual guidebook which among many other things provides info on public ramps and parking options. Beyond that, contact the town office for where you want to launch to get more ‘local’ information on good secure locations to leave your rig.
Tom Gilmore says:
Thanks Henri I am going to join MITA today
David Tew says:
MITA is one of the best, most inspiring things about living here on the Maine coast.
Rick Robinson says:
A heart felt thank you to all the members of the Maine Island Trail Association for what you do and what you teach by example.
Fred Kappus says:
Where do we fly in to from Cleveland?
Dirk Faegre says:
Perhaps, Bangor (BGR) or Portland (PWM) but be prepared to self-quarantine for 14 days, please.
Gilberto Frola says:

So don’t stop to believe and don’t stop to share !!
Mitchell Denny says:
Maine is a lot like my home in Southeast Alaska which also has many islands. It would be nice to visit Maine one day, maybe after I finish up working on my sailboat. I have a 35′ Choey Lee 1959. Thank you for the video.
Graeme Harrison says:
Hi , reading this message I see it’s suggesting I go on a trip around the islands of Main, which I would love to see,but I live in Australia haha. Thanks for the invite, I am interested in the sailing of the OffCenterHarbor Yahts. Which I would love to build one for myself. Thanks again, Graeme Harrison.
Kenny Robinson says:
