One of our favorite past-times is visiting boat yards to take walkabouts with talented boatbuilders, and Peter Brookes of Brookes Boatbuilders in New Zealand is among the best we’ve seen.

What is the type of wood they mention? Is it native to NZ?

    • Simon Houlder says:

Kauri trees or Agathis australis are found only in NZ, is a pine tree and only available from dead trees on private land. An individual kauri can live for more than two millennia, reaching 200 feet tall and more than 16 feet in diameter. There is a lucrative market for swamp pine, that is trees that are dug out of the ground, they do not rot!

That looks like a very good atmosphere to build or rebuild boats. Inspiring!

What cracking work. We’re just down the coast from Fairlie. I loved seeing Impala. I’ve taken a weeks leave next June when the next Fife Regatta takes place and booked my boat into Largs Marina so’s I can bob about watching all day! Thanks again.

Peter is a boat builder rockstar. Always willing to impart with his valuable boat building experience and knowledge to those of us who ask for opinion and guidance. To witness his scarily perfect craftsmanship first hand is a privilege.Well done OCH on another great vid.

The most beautiful work I’ve ever seen!

  • dean plender says:

Curious what he meant by a ‘step scarf’ on the outer hull?

    • Lynn Watson says:

Most glued scarfs are made with matched sloping faces that run out to a feather edge (what he calls a “hairy”edge). It’s strong but looks a bit ragged on the face of the plank. So he feathers the inside end of the scarf and hides it behind a frame, then steps the other end down a little to get a clean line that looks like a butt joint, but isn’t. It’s just as strong and only about three times more work :)
