Pete Zizos says:
Pretty boat. Great teaching and learning experience.
Drew Britten says:
What a wonderful educational program and a small world! My wife and will be in the Bellingham area for the holiday weekend, and we had already booked 2 spots on the Zodiac for for the May 26 day sail. We can’t wait to see all that rigging and bright-work in person.
Drew Britten says:
I am happy to report we had a wonderful time on Zodiac! I got to pitch in with a half-dozen other guests to take up the peak halyard, while another group raised the throat halyard on the starboard side. The all-volunteer crew was a flurry of activity as we tacked around Bellingham Bay. I even got to talk at length to a few that were featured in the video. We are are already making plans to return for a multi-day sail on the Zodiac.
Nate Rooks says:
Love to hear it, Drew!
Sailor 65 says:
What an amazing experience, that will last a lifetime. So happy for the team.
Michael Walker says:
Raising sails was rather quiet. Missed the unison of hauling while singing a shanty. Though modern sensibilities differ from the era of shantys, it feels as something was missing from the students’ experience. I wonder whether the young sailors could begin to appreciate the toughness of a sailing mariner’s life based on the variety of shantys and emotions they evoke. Perhaps after gaining an appreciation of how our ancestors dealt with a life at sea, students could come up with their own shantys for hauling away on the boat.
As the students said, this was a real education. Still doing science, math, navigation, weather, but doing it for real… with real consequences.
Well done Salish Sea Expeditions / Northwest Maritime Center and, of course, OCH my first choice for having on a desert island.
