Preview: The Three Boats I Lust After (and Why)

The first of my favorite boats is the 11 foot sailing tender just being finished off at Gannon & Benjamin, here in Vineyard Haven, to a design by Nat Benjamin. Simple and elegant, she’ll row or sail like a dream.

The second boat is the great nautical love of my life: the schooner WHEN AND IF, designed by John G. Alden and built by F.F. Pendleton in Wiscasset, ME, in 1939 for General George Patton. She is sturdy, enduring, classic, simple, wholesome, seakindly, elegant in her own way, a great family boat, much loved by all, and beautiful. I’ve never heard a bad word about her. She’s one hat Alden modeled after traditional working boats rather than delicate, elegant yachts.
