Preview: In My Shop: A Fox, a Willow, a Phoenix, a Skerrie Skiff & a Pram

How I spent my winter vacation…

Bill Thomas Woodworking Shop

This past winter I seem to have been a full-time boat shop. That’s not always the case; the work I do is often quite varied. There is generally a mix of cabinet and furniture work stirred in with the boatbuilding. I also habitually slow the pace just a bit in the winter; to sort of catch-my-breath after a summer of teaching, shop projects and playing outside. This winter however, after afew fall house projects, I jumped right back into the shop. No complaints though, I’ve had a blast!

Have you put together plans yet for the pram? I built and east port pram from chesapeake light craft kit and gave it away (fool) I would like to build another.

I was intrigued enough by the Phoenix III to buy the study plans but haven’t made the final leap. There’s not much on the web about it, though it appears to be a fast and seaworthy little beach cruiser. Any commentary (especially with photos) you’d find time to post would be well received.

      Hi Brad,
I discovered the design when the client I’m building the boat for told me about it. It’s simply a stunning boat. I’ll be sure to write more about the boat, and post photos, both here and on my website when I have the time.

Brad I too was intrigued by the PIII. Still would love to have one as I’m a bit more of a spirited sailor and like what I see with it’s planing etc.. But I chose the ILUR. In as much as it is slower I believe it is more stable to move around in and I’m more about the “trip” these days. I’m getting older and having a boat that supports the unknown of the years ahead better, is where I chose to go. With all the room my Grandsons love to crawl around and goof off in her even if she’s still in the garage! Standing by the mast is a great place to be when underway (my wife’s always there). When I want to be spirited I still race my Force5. I will not miss the chance to sail in the PIII when the opportunity presents itself…
