The Elements of Seamanship, by Roger Taylor
A good place to start, and to end as well. Learning what Roger considers elements pretty much covers it all.

David Tew says:
A while ago I read LF Herreshoff’s serialized Rudder articles that became “The Compleat Cruiser”. It was intriguing how the articles were edited and changed for the book. The conclusion of the ‘cruise’ (and thus the serial) in Rudder was left entirely out of the book and was a lost opportunity. The last day and night of the cruise was mystical and reflected LFH’s enjoyment of night sailing as he enjoyed it in real life.
